So last Saturday we laid the down the basic tracks to 7 songs. Anyone smell a double EP in the near future?
Birmingham, Alabama's Cosmonaut Vacation is a mentality that emerged from the need to play rock and roll loud and proud. Full stop.
In May 2011, after a couple of months of mulling on the idea, Greg Slamen, of Through the Sparks and Stateside, decided to start his own band and his own brand of spaced-out, psychedelic rock and roll. Influenced by the whimsy of the Kinks, attitude of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the sheer power of Oasis and the arrangements of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Slamen twisted seemingly simple chords into songs that ring fresh and inspired. He's not trying to reinvent the wheel. He just wants to put a new coat on it.
After recording a four song demo, Slamen found simpatico mates in Zach Evans and Shawn Avery and together embarked on a mission to play laid back raucous music written to be played live and clutter-free. Soon after, Cosmonaut Vacation enlisted Slamen's former bandmate, Nikolaus Mimikakis, to fill out the guitar parts.
Having written over an hour of music, the band has now played to great review and is picking up fans the "old fashioned" way - by rocking their faces off.
The band will head into the studio in February 2012 and plans to release two EPs within the year. The first EP is sure to include the crowd favorite, "24 Hours Ago" - a chooglin' piece of whoop-ass that could be a lost recording from the Faces with Damon Albarn singing, if we was from the South. Add to that, the drony, noise rock Neu!-inspired epic "New World Order" which features a Moog arpeggiator driving the second half of the 12 minute song, and Cosmonaut Vacation conjure the likings of a good Hawkwind show.
Sounds like: Brian Jonestown Massacre, Oasis, the Dandy Warhols, MGMT
Influences: Kinks, Can, Neu!, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind
